How it works & the fine print:
There are many different ways to teach and learn online and having studied online for 2 years during my degree I know some of the pitfalls to avoid. In teaching these courses I think I have developed the best blend of techniques that suit a range of different learning styles and personality types.
I realise as a learner it can be difficult to envisage exactly what a course entails and what you are signing up for so I have outlined a lot of details below. I want to be totally transparent so have also included all the terms and conditions, so you can see what kind of a values we hold and be confident that there are no nasty surprises in store.
A great way to get a better feel for our courses and see if our style suits you is to sign up for a taster session and follow us on social media where you can see more of what we get up to from behind the scenes. ~ Chris
The course content is hosted on Google Classroom and you will need a gmail email address to sign up, these are free to create if you don’t have one and instruction of how to do this is provided.
Weekly tutorial calls take place online via Google Meet with your tutor and several of your peers, during a pre determined time slot. Also provided is a private online page, know as the Stream, for you to communicate with your peers, share images, ask questions and give comments & feedback. You have 24/7 access to the teaching resources and online Stream.
The teaching resources are made up from video clips and written & illustrated guides. New content is published weekly, except during any pre arranged weeks off. Most weeks have either a theme or an exercise that is recommended as homework. It’s advisable to keep up with the class if possible but all learners are free to work through the content at their own pace. Access to the teaching resources and Stream will remain live for at least a month after the final class video call.
For photo editing we use the most up to date version of Adobe Photoshop 2020 (Creative Cloud) & Affinity Photo 2020 software, if you have older software please expect and allow for minor differences; for the most part these are easy to overcome. While we are happy to provide advice about backward compatibility please be aware we can only be experts in the software we use ourselves and some extra research on your part may be required.
Expectations: White Oak Studios is a happy and supportive learning environment; we have never had any issues with bad behaviour. I believe this will continue long into the future, nevertheless let it be clear that bullying or anti social behaviour towards staff or learners will not be tolerated. If any individual makes fellow learners uncomfortable & threatens their ability to learn with hateful speech or hurtful unfounded comments we reserve the right to remove them from the social elements of the course i.e. the video calls & shared online classroom stream; this is to safeguard the rest of the group.
