Workshops
I offer a variety of workshops giving a chance to work face to face delivering theory and practical advice. I'm happy to travel across Northumberland visiting groups of interested individuals.
Upcoming events and a small selection of the topics we have covered in the past are listed here.

Creating Cyanotypes
Cyanotypes are a type of slow photography that does not require a camera. In a style known as contact printing they are made by placing objects onto paper impregnated with the right chemicals, then exposing the paper to light.
This workshop is an introduction to this wonderful world of alchemy. An introduction will inform and inspire participants who then undertake the practical exercise which gives all a chance to create their own images to take away.
People have been making Cyanotypes for 180 years, originally this technique was used to create copies of important documents (blueprints) and for creating scientific records (see Anna Atkins and her pioneering botanical work). It's a fascinating process as you watch the images form before you, changing as more light then water is added.
All materials, including gloves, are provided. Guests are asked to consider that the chemicals, which usually wash out of clothing, could stain and are invited to dress accordingly.
Numbers are limited giving each person space and time to create their own cyanotypes.
A 2 hour Workshop is £20.
Please be sure to book your place. This can be done by following the relevant link below and completing an RSVP form.

Astrophotography
With thanks to Simon Etheridge for all of the images above.
An introduction to looking at and photographing the night sky, this event is suitable for beginners or those hoping to develop their skills or increase their knowledge. We are very lucky to have an experienced and interesting astronomer attending to help explain what we will see. The hall has a seating area, toilets and kitchen. Hot drinks will be provided. In the event of mixed weather on the evening of the event, to keep us occupied while the clouds blow over we have alternative activities for both photography and astronomy suitable for indoors.
Highly recommended: Warm clothes, RED torches, camera, tripod, binoculars.
Useful to bring: a long / telephoto lens, shutter release / remote control,
The organisers will have equipment which can be used during the event.

Wildlife Photography
This topic has been popular with both photographers and natural historians. The presentation shows an array of wonderful wildlife images and gives detailed but accessible information on how to improve your own field craft and photography, no matter what equipment you have.
Portraiture
Posing people, raising a smile, managing the light and remembering to check all your camera settings simultaneously is daunting for most photographers. Thankfully all these skills can be learned and where better than in a controlled low stress environment. This session has proved popular with camera clubs where participants have had the chance to swot up on theory and take some nice images for their portfolio.
